DoYu Digital’s newest roster addition ZURGLIN showcases his penchant for unrepentant and unique dubstep with IDGAF, the Calgary-based producer’s sophomore EP. Each of the four tracks stays true to dubstep’s most classical elements, particularly minimal percussion, thundering basslines, and brooding atmospheres. ZURGLIN simultaneously demonstrates how he’s made the genre his own by incorporating the sound design stylings of modern free-form bass music and using sampling to give tracks their own thematic flair.

Sitting at the traditional dubstep tempo of 140 beats-per-minute, the title track “IDGAF” is an exercise in juxtaposing intensity with space. Stripped-down percussion, frenzied laser-like bass pulses, and subtle layers of atmospheric instrumentation combine with “bichota”-style rap vocals to give this track an unwaveringly gritty soundscape.

“Connect The Cutz” switches the atmosphere, opting for sludgy, slow burning halftime dubstep oozing with textured bass. Following an intro that sounds like it’s pulled from a psychological thriller the track’s thick staticky bass takes centre stage, warping and shifting with each beat while intermittent samples retain that horror movie aesthetic.

Premiered by Headbang Society, “Smoke This Club” sees ZURGLIN brandishing his wavetable sound design chops to unleash a menacing and otherwordly mechanized soundscape. Another lumbering halftime track, weighty riddim-style staccato bass hits are interspersed with metallic sounds and a flurry of warped digital instrumentation.

Premiered by The Gradiant Perspective, “Whip It” distinguishes itself with it’s smoky, meditative atmosphere that draws influence from genres like G-funk and gangster rap. From the drop the track is dominated by a wonky, note-shifting leading synth and a wall of low-end bass. This synth, in conjunction with “whip it” vocal samples throughout the track, fuels its hip-hop-adjacent West Coast character.
